Chicago Blackhawks Rumors: Free-Agent Prospect On Team's Radar

The Chicago Blackhawks are in a full-on rebuild and are aiming to improve their prospect pool because of it. As a result of this, it makes sense to hear that they are currently one of the teams linked to undrafted college free agent Hunter McKown, according to Scott Powers.

McKown is currently in his third season with Colorado College and had himself a breakout campaign. In 38 games, he led his team in both goals (21) and points (28). This came as a bit of a surprise, too, as McKown's offensive game at the collegiate level had not taken off in the two previous seasons. Yet, now his strong season has resulted in teams like the Blackhawks being interested in signing him.

Yet, what makes McKown even more promising of a prospect is that he has been heavily praised for his solid defensive play. As a result, there is reason to believe that he will be ready for a bottom-six role at the NHL level as soon as next season. Thus, with the Blackhawks rebuilding, it would make sense for them to take a chance on the 20-year-old center. We will need to wait and see if they end up being the team to sign him from here.

Update: The Blackhawks have missed out on McKown, as he has signed an entry-level contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
