NHL Rumors: 3 Teams to Target David Kampf This Offseason

Heading into the 2022-23 NHL season, David Kampf looked to be one of the best under-the-radar signings. When GM Kyle Dubas signed him in 2021, a lot of Leafs Nations questioned who he was and why they would have signed him. Well, now he has finished two seasons with the Leafs and fans love him. He is the type of player that most teams would love to have. He is a defensive-minded forward, who wins faceoffs at a high percentage. Kampf is now heading into the offseason on an expiring deal, so let's take a look at 3 teams that could target him this offseason

Toronto Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs should be expected to be the front-runner for David Kampf this offseason. It is no secret that the management group and coaching staff love him. They use him in all situations and he always seems to be able to deliver what is asked of him. Toronto tried hard to change the culture of the team at the 2023 NHL trade deadline, and Kampf fits that mould alongside Sam Lafferty and Noel Acciari. It would be shocking if the Maple Leafs let Kampf walk to free agency this offseason.

Pittsburgh Penguins

If Kampf does walk to free agency, the Pittsburgh Penguins could be a team to take a run at him. The Penguins recently ended one of the longest playoff streaks in all of pro sports. As a result, the ownership group cleaned house in the front office, and is expected to make more changes to the roster. They will need to insulate Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin with depth players who can do the small things to help the stars. Kampf can play against the opponents' top lines in a shutdown role to leave Crosby and Malkin the easier matchups.

Detroit Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings are one of the teams in the East that struggled down the stretch. They had a hard time stopping the opponent from scoring, a player like David Kampf could help with that. He can play on the third or fourth line and be the defensive centreman that the Red Wings need. If their big guns like Lucas Raymond and Dylan Larkin can keep up their production, adding Kampf can help solidify their bottom six, which can potentially lead to a playoff appearance.
