3 Potential Free-Agent Destinations for James van Riemsdyk

James van Riemsdyk went through it all this past season as the Philadelphia Flyers forward was sure he was getting traded and then all of a sudden Flyers management decided against it. JVR admitted it was a horrible experience and he's excited to move on this summer. Here's a few potential free-agent destinations for the veteran winger:

Detroit Red Wings

The Red Wings are a team to watch this summer because they are getting very close to playoff contention and thought they traded for JVR last season. They also have a ton of cap space to work with and will be looking to add some more offense this summer. They showed last season by signing David Perron they aren't afraid to spend on veteran players, JVR could be this summer's Perron in Motown.

New Jersey Devils

If you had to ask JVR where his #1 preferred destination would be, it's likely his hometown Devils. Crazy part is the Devils are contending this season and head into next year with over $30 million in cap space for 2023-24. The team has a ton of free agents to consider bringing back but let's say if the likes of Tomas Tatar or Erik Haula, look for the team to turn to a player like JVR about a contract. He recorded 29 points in 61 games last season.

Columbus Blue Jackets

The Jackets are a team to watch as they try to creep closer to contending for a playoff spot. There's hope they land Connor Bedard in the NHL Draft Lottery, but regardless of where they fall at the draft, look for the team to try and add some veteran help up front. JVR could come in cheap and provide some secondary offense, given the geography of it all, there could be interest from the player as well. Ideally, he's playing for a Stanley Cup next season, but ensuring his family is comfortable may be more important for JVR at this point.
