Red Wings 2021 First-Round Draft Pick Out 4-6 Months After Surgery

Detroit Red Wings' defenseman Simon Edvinsson recently underwent successful left shoulder surgery on May 1st, which will require 4-6 months of recovery time.

As a result, the 20-year-old Swedish defenseman may miss the start of the 2023-24 NHL season.

Edvinsson, who was drafted sixth overall by the Red Wings in the 2021 NHL Draft, made his NHL debut in March 2023, scoring two goals and earning 12 penalty minutes in nine games while averaging over 17 minutes of ice time.

Prior to his NHL debut, he played 52 games in the AHL for the Grand Rapids Griffins, recording five goals and 22 assists, along with 52 penalty minutes.

In addition to his successful AHL debut, Edvinsson represented Sweden at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship, scoring a goal and two points in six games and helping his team earn a bronze medal.

While Edvinsson's injury setback is disappointing for the Red Wings, his impressive debut performances in the NHL and AHL, as well as his international experience, suggest that he has a bright future ahead of him in the league. Photo Credit: Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports
