Washington Capitals to Name New Head Coach

The Washington Capitals have a new bench boss. The team is set to hire former Toronto Maple Leafs assistant coach Spencer Carbery to fulfill their coaching vacancy.

Carbery has spent the last two seasons with the Maple Leafs and was a huge part of the team's power-play success. Toronto's power play ranks second in the league the past two seasons with Carbery at the helm. Prior to the Leafs, Carbery was the head coach of the Hershey Bears in the American Hockey League from 2018-2021.

Washington began their coaching search mid-April after letting veteran bench boss Peter Laviolette go. Laviolette appears to be the front runner to land the head coaching job of the New York Rangers.

The Capitals reportedly also interviewed Jeff Halpern of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Brad Shaw of the Philadelphia Flyers throughout their recruitment process before landing on Carbery.
