NHLTR Mock Trade: Calgary Flames Trade Tyler Toffoli to the Washington Capitals

Welcome to NHLTR mock trade series where we will showcase a potential 2023 offseason trade. From minor moves to major transactions, everything will be covered as we try to predict how the chips may fall this summer across the NHL.

For today's segment we stay in Calgary to watch the Flames burn down from the seams. The team is in turmoil as now four players have come forward and confirmed to new general manager Craig Conroy they have no interest in re-signing with the hockey club next season. First we zoned in on Noah Hanifin to the Pittsburgh Penguins, this time around it's Tyler Toffoli's turn.

NHLTR Mock Trade: Flames deal Tyler Toffoli to the Washington Capitals for Evgeny Kuznetsov.

Flames perspective: Conroy has no choice but to move Toffoli this summer and getting back a center who can play among the top six would be considered a win. Calgary doesn't have a ton of negotiating leverage considering everyone knows the players want out. Kuznetsov gives them a veteran center to plug in for the next two seasons and someone who has point-per-game potential. Yes, the Russian forward holds trade protection, but perhaps playing alongside Jonathan Huberdeau can spark some interest in Calgary. Conroy is trying to be competitive next season so this is the type of retooling we could see from the Flames.

Capitals perspective: The Caps tried with Connor Brown last summer and after four games he got injured and missed the entire season. Toffoli is the perfect target for Washington as he's a proven winner, can play either wing and would help provide some secondary scoring. Dylan Strome has shown the ability to play behind Niklas Backstrom and with an offensive focused coach in Spencer Carberry joining the team, it could be a recipe for success. The team has been trying to move Kuznetsov for over a year and a half and landing Toffoli would be a huge get for the franchise.
