NHLTR Mock Trade: Nashville Predators trade Matt Duchene to the Edmonton Oilers

Welcome to NHLTR mock trade series where we will showcase a potential 2023 offseason trade. From minor moves to major transactions, everything will be covered as we try to predict how the chips may fall this summer across the NHL.

For today's proposed deal we make way to Smashville to zone in on the Nashville Predators who appear to be blowing things up. The team moved Ryan Johansen to the Colorado Avalanche in a salary dump and Matt Duchene could be next.

NHLTR Mock Trade: Preds trade Matt Duchene (retaining 50% salary) to the Edmonton Oilers for Kailer Yamamoto.

Predators perspective: A new era is set to begin in Nashville as Barry Trotz looks to clean house. The team has been trying to move on from Johansen for over a year and now with that 'problem' dealt with, they can turn their attention to Duchene. Yes, they will have some dead cap space to deal with but adding a young talent like Yamamoto helps ease the burden. The speedy winger has top six potential and would be given a huge opportunity for playing time with the Preds.

Oilers perspective: Edmonton is likely to move on from Yamamoto this summer and this move would be a win-now transaction. Duchene gives them options down the middle and could help balance their attack among their top six. He has three seasons left on his deal and at only $4 million would be a bargain.

The Oilers are looking to move Yamamoto and the Predators have hit the rebuild button. These two could easily become trade partners once again after a mid-season blockbuster in 22-23.
