Canadiens Rumors: Trade Offers Heating Up for Veteran Defenseman

The Montreal Canadiens are in an interesting spot this season as GM Kent Hughes is looking to add and sell ahead of the trade deadline. The Habs are just four points out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and while they have a number of pending free agents who Hughes could listen on, there's also defenseman David Savard who has been turning heads.

Savard has made his way back from injury and has appeared in 11 games posting seven points. He's blocking shots like crazy at almost three per game and he's been a force on the Canadiens' PK, while also chipping in offensively.

Eric Engels of Sportsnet recently wondered if the time is now to move Savard just based on how well he's playing and how much Hughes could get for him. The veteran right-handed defenseman is signed through next season at $3.5 million and Savard does not hold any trade protection in his contract.

If Montreal starts to fall out of the playoff picture heading into early 2024, look for Hughes to pull the trigger on a couple of trades, with Savard being a very likely trade candidate to be moved. You can also add Jake Allen and Sean Monahan to that list.
