Insider: 5 Teams Rumored Suitors For Mario Ferraro

Talks seem to have intensified around the league for trade commodity Mario Ferraro of the San Jose Sharks. Several teams have been mentioned as being interested in the left-shot defenseman, and today, the Insiders at The Fourth Period have posited five noted suitors:

The Carolina Hurricanes, Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames and Dallas Stars are among the teams believed to have interest in Ferraro, who is also on the radar of several other clubs.

The Hurricanes had been listed as a candidate already, while the Leafs and Oilers have been prominent as teams looking to add to their respective bluelines. The Flames are an interesting name here, as they have their own notable D-men on the trade market themselves. The New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders have also previously been mentioned as having Ferraro on their radar.

But whichever team is able to engage Sharks GM Mike Grier on a potential deal, the word is that he isn't actually looking for more future assets or draft picks for Ferraro, says the report.

Any move involving Ferraro may look like a talent-for-talent swap or in a larger package that brings back young, NHL-talent to San Jose.

The 25-year-old carries a $3.25M cap hit, on a deal that runs through the 2025-26 season, so with two more years to run after this one, and at a reasonable price, it would take a nice package to convince Grier to pull the trigger.

Insider Elliotte Friedman has said he doesn't think that will be a problem. “There will be a team, whether it be Carolina or somebody else, that will do it for Ferraro. They will be able to get good assets for him because he is a good player, if that is what they want to do.”

Ferraro is logging another heavy load on the Sharks' blueline this season, at 22 minutes a night. But with the rebuilding team around him struggling mightily for much of the year, his numbers have taken a beating to this point, with four assists and a plus/minus of -19 in 26 games.
