Penguins Rumors: Pacific Team Targeted Reilly Smith

The Pittsburgh Penguins have had a very disappointing 2023-24 season. Due to this, they were sellers at the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline and notably traded away star forward Jake Guentzel to the Carolina Hurricanes.

Another Penguins forward who was in the rumor leading up to deadline day was Reilly Smith. While Smith ended up staying put, he garnered trade interest, as NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported that the Kings were among the suitors for the veteran winger.

There were plenty of rumblings that the Kings would go and try to add a winger before the deadline passed. It was understandable, as they have multiple forwards out, and they could have used more scoring help because of it. However, they just could not find a way to get down with Smith.

Smith will now look to end this season on a high note with the Penguins. When noting that he is under contract beyond this campaign, the Penguins are certainly in a position where they could look to explore this trade market again this summer. We will need to wait and see what happens on that front from here.

In 57 games this season with the Pens, Smith has 11 goals and 29 points.
