4 Possible Trade Destinations For Bruins' Korpisalo
Joonas Korpisalo is reportedly not pleased with the lack of playing time on the Boston Bruins. With Jeremy Swayman there, even if he didn't have a great season, Korpisalo is the backup.
Korpisalo was good at times last season, and that really embodies how his career has been as well. He is an NHL goalie, but not one that can be trusted to be the starter. He has had a couple of good seasons, but also bad ones at the same time. The contract the Ottawa Senators gave him was a risky one that the Bruins have taken on. If he wants a trade out of Boston for more playing time, we'll look at a few destinations that could be good landing spots for him.
Florida Panthers
The Florida Panthers might be in some trouble in net after next season depending on what Sergei Bobrovsky decides to do. He is heading into the final year of his deal, will be 36 years old, and has done everything he can in the NHL including winning a Stanley Cup and Vezina Trophies. After trading Spencer Knight this season and Devon Levi in 2021, there really isn't a young backup plan in place in net. Korpisalo is a riskier goalie to trust to do close to what Bobrovsky has done, but he would be behind a better team. The Panthers need a backup and the Bruins would have to retain to get Korpisalo's cap hit down if a trade were to happen.
Philadelphia Flyers
The Philadelphia Flyers really don't have a clear direction in net. Even though Samuel Ersson claimed the starter role last season and even prior to that, there are other options in Ivan Fedotov and Alexei Kolosov. None of them had higher than a .883 SV% last season and a goalie is part of what is holding them back and keeping them in a rebuild for now. Korpisalo has had good save percentages on bad teams before, but he seems like a better option than what Philly has at the moment.
Vancouver Canucks
The Vancouver Canucks have invested in Kevin Lankinen moving forward, but that doesn't mean he is the clear starter for the team. He could do well playing half the games and another goalie took the other half. Right now that's Thatcher Demko, but injuries have just hurt him too much in his career. Arturs Silovs is also a depth option, but there's a possibility he doesn't actually turn into an NHL goalie, regardless of what he did in a short span in the 2024 playoffs. If Korpisalo could even get a 50-50 job rather than a clear backup, that would probably be a situation he's more happy with. It at least gives him more of an opportunity.
San Jose Sharks
The San Jose Sharks aren't going into next season without adding a veteran goalie. They traded Mackenzie Blackwood and Vitek Vanecek this season as well as told Alexandar Geargiev he isn't returning. Yaroslav Askarov is going to be a full time NHLer next season, but Korpisalo could be a decent fit in net in San Jose as well. It would give him the playing time he seeks and he is a veteran that Askarov can split time with. The Sharks aren't expecting to make the playoffs yet, so there isn't much risk involved.
