Breaking NHL News: Joel Quenneville Hiring to be Announced Today

According to sources, Joel Quenneville will be named new head coach of the Anaheim Ducks

It took a year after he was officially reinstated by commissioner Gary Bettman, but three-time Stanley Cup champion coach Joel Quenneville has landed back behind a bench, as according to several insider sources, he will be named the new head coach of the Anaheim Ducks.

The announcement, per insider Darren Dreger, should come as early as today.

Back in late April, we shared the news that the Ducks had interviewed Quenneville, and according to one source, had even offered him the job. It took another two weeks or so, but it appears to be coming to fruition.

Dreger adds that sources told him that the Ducks did "an extensive background check specific to the Kyle Beach case, including the work Quenneville has done to reform from mistakes made during that time."

The Ducks fired Greg Cronin last month after two seasons at the helm.

Why was Joel Quenneville banned from the NHL for three years?

Quenneville led the Chicago Blackhawks to three Cups in the 2010s, but was temporarily exiled from the league in 2021 after investigations showed that he exhibited an "inadequate response" to the Kyle Beach sexual assault allegations.

In a 25-year coaching career in the NHL, the 66-year-old Quenneville has a record of 969-572-77 for a .612 points percentage. He won the Cup with Chicago in 2010, 2013 and 2015.

In addition to his 11 years behind the bench in the Windy City, he also spent eight years leading the St. Louis Blues, and three seasons each with the Colorado Avalanche and Florida Panthers.

The Ducks finished the recently concluded season with 80 points, a vast improvement over the 59 points from the year before. However, they were still under .500 and well back of a playoff spot. They hope the hiring of the experienced championship-winning Quenneville will vault the young, talented team into contender status.
