Sabres Have 3 New Interesting Names Potentially Entering Trade Market
The Buffalo Sabres appear to be a mess this offseason as at least a quarter of the players are reportedly unhappy with the direction of the team and they still haven't made positive strides to breaking the playoff drought. With JJ Peterka and Bowen Byram already reportedly being shopped, Frank Seravalli revealed three more names that could enter the trade market. These players being Owen Power, Alex Tuch, and Mattias Samuelsson.
These names are a little more surprising, especially since Power and Samuelsson are at the start of their long-term deals at good prices. Power is 22 years old and has a $8.35 million AAV cap hit until 2031, but as a former first overall pick, he is going to get a whole lot better. Samuelsson is 25 years old and a solid second pairing defender. He is signed through 2030 at $4.285 million AAV. The Sabres have plenty of cap space to still work with.
Tuch is an interesting one because when the Sabres brought him over from the Vegas Golden Knights, they wanted players that wanted to play in Buffalo. That was Tuch, so either the lack of success has gotten to him or the Sabres are looking to upgrade or stay level if he is possibly going to leave after the last year of his deal. Tuch is on a very fair contract with a cap hit of $4.75 million AAV and only has a five-team no trade list. The 29-year-old had the second best season of his career by scoring 34 goals and 64 points in 79 games. I don't see why Buffalo would want to get rid of someone in their prime who will help them push forward. If anything, they should be looking to extend him for 4-6 years.
While the Sabres have collected a lot of good pieces, it all hasn't come together yet. A big part of that was because the goaltending and defensive play from the team just hasn't been good enough. Moving on from some of their young players may feel like a loss, but they've been doing the same thing over and over again without results. Maybe a shock needs to happen. It will be very intriguing to see which Sabres are still on the team after all is said and done this offseason.
