Avalanche Could Trade Away Multiple Recently Acquired Players
The Colorado Avalanche appear to be in a big cap crunch for next season as their projected cap space is $1.2 million and have 19/23 players on the roster. This problem has brought up questions as to who may be dealt or even bought out this summer to make room and make the team better.
Frank Seravalli said that there are questions about the fit of Charlie Coyle with the Avalanche while there have also been reports that Martin Necas was unhappy with his time in Colorado and could be moved.
Both Coyle and Necas were acquired this season. Necas did very well and looked to be a piece that the Avalanche could continue forward with. I can't see why he didn't like his time on the Avalanche as he played the majority of the time with Nathan MacKinnon and had 11 goals and 28 points in 30 games.
With Brock Nelson signed for three more years, Coyle is locked in as the third line center or third line player. That is a good spot for him, but $5.25 million AAV remains an overpayment for a third line player like that.
Coyle and Necas both have one more year left on their contracts and then they are UFAs. This would make it easier for a team to acquire Coyle from them for sure. With Ross Colton as a third line center option, Coyle seems like the most expendable player on the Avalanche other than Miles Wood. If the Avalanche could find a way to move off of both and retain little to no money, that would be their ideal path ahead of free agency where they could spend a bit. But the Avalanche have to find a way to keep Necas. That would be another big and unnecessary loss.
