NHL Breaking News: Boston Bruins Decide on New Head Coach

The Boston Bruins finally have themselves a new head coach, naming one of their own, former Bruins player Marco Sturm as the new bench boss.

It's been a long process since they fired Jim Montgomery last November, but the Boston Bruins finally have themselves a new head coach, naming one of their own, former Bruins player Marco Sturm as the new bench boss.

Sturm, 46, played 14 years in the NHL, including five seasons in Boston, registering 20+ goals in four of those years.

He had been head coach of the LA Kings' AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign, for the last three seasons, posting an impressive 119-80-17 record, a .593 winning percentage. Before that, he was an assistant coach with the Kings.

“Throughout this process, our goal was to identify a coach who could uphold our strong defensive foundation while helping us evolve offensively," said Bruins GM Don Sweeney in a statement.

"We were also looking for a communicator and leader – someone who connects with players, develops young talent, and earns the respect of the room. Marco impressed us at every step with his preparation, clarity, and passion."

New head coach Marco Sturm knows all about Bruins fans' passion

"Boston has always held a special place in my heart, and I know how much this team means to the city and to our fans," said Sturm. "I’ve felt that passion as a player, and I can’t wait to be behind the bench and feel it again. I’m excited to get to work and do everything I can to help this team succeed.”

Sturm was a key player in helping turn the franchise around on the ice from 2005-2010, eventually leading to a Bruins Stanley Cup title in 2011, the year after he departed.
