NHL Rumors: 5 Free Agents Flying Under The Radar

Chicago Blackhawks forward Ryan Donato during 2025 game.

With NHL free agency set to open on July 1, most of the buzz has surrounded big names like Mitch Marner, Sam Bennett, and Brad Marchand.

But as Joe Yerdon of Bleacher Report points out, there’s a quieter tier of free agents poised to deliver strong value for savvy teams. These aren’t franchise cornerstones, but they’re far from filler.

Ryan Donato

Ryan Donato exploded for a career-best 31 goals and 62 points in Chicago this past season, doubling his previous high. The 29-year-old showed elite finishing touch despite being on a rebuilding Blackhawks squad. While skeptics may view it as a contract-year fluke, Donato has consistently displayed offensive instincts and net-front presence throughout his career. With scoring at a premium in this year's market, he could command strong interest from teams needing middle-six firepower, especially if Chicago lets him test free agency.

Andrei Kuzmenko

Kuzmenko took the NHL by storm with 39 goals in his debut season, but multiple trades and inconsistent usage have hindered him since. Even after a down year split between three clubs, the 29-year-old still flashed his natural scoring talent. His career shooting percentage (20.7%) suggests he’s no fluke. On a more stable roster, Kuzmenko could easily rebound into a productive secondary scorer. A short-term, low-risk deal could pay off big for a team willing to give him a defined role.

Dante Fabbro

Once a top prospect in Nashville, Dante Fabbro quietly resurrected his career in Columbus after being waived. The 26-year-old posted 26 points and averaged over 21 minutes a night with the Blue Jackets, showing poise and two-way ability. Right-handed defensemen are always in demand, especially ones hitting their prime. Fabbro won’t be cheap, but with youth and upside on his side, he may be one of the most sought-after blueliners available outside the marquee names.

Trent Frederic

Trent Frederic is the kind of playoff-built player every contender wants. Known for his physicality and edge, the 27-year-old also chipped in with back-to-back 17- and 18-goal seasons before injuries this year. He brings versatility, speed, can play up and down the lineup, and isn’t afraid to drop the gloves. Frederic’s ability to combine grit with offense makes him an ideal fit for teams trying to emulate the rugged style of recent Cup contenders.

Dmitry Orlov

Orlov isn’t getting the attention of flashier defenders, but his last two seasons in Carolina have been models of consistency. At 34, he’s still a smart puck mover who can play in all situations and bring playoff experience to any blue line. With a declining cap hit likely and a desire to win, Orlov could be a high-impact addition to a contender’s second or third pair.
