NHL Trade Rumors: Canucks Linked To Ducks' Mason McTavish

Anaheim Ducks forward Mason McTavish celebrates goal during 2025 game.

As contract negotiations between the Anaheim Ducks and restricted free agent Mason McTavish stall, the Vancouver Canucks are emerging as a potential suitor for the 22-year-old center.

Multiple reports suggest the Canucks are seriously interested, but the cost to acquire McTavish, if he's even made available, would be steep.

According to Ben Kuzma of The Province, McTavish's camp is pushing for a long-term deal in the $7–8 million range, while projections from AFP Analytics peg a six-year contract closer to $6.67 million AAV.

Ducks GM Pat Verbeek is known for playing hardball, and while he hasn’t confirmed McTavish is available, his silence and the ongoing impasse have fueled speculation. Some insiders, including Rick Dhaliwal, believe the Canucks don’t have the assets to get a deal done, despite their strong interest.

What Would It Cost Vancouver to Get McTavish?

To pry McTavish from Anaheim, Vancouver would likely need to offer a significant package, possibly a roster player like Nils Höglander, a top prospect such as Victor Mancini, and at least two high draft picks.

The Canucks’ 2025 first-rounder and 2026 second-rounder have been floated as potential starting points. While an offer sheet is technically possible, the Ducks have the cap space to match, and Vancouver doesn’t hold the draft capital required to go high enough to sway Anaheim.

A Perfect Fit, But a Distant Possibility?

McTavish’s game (physical, skilled, and playoff-ready) would be an ideal complement to Vancouver’s current core. He’d immediately slot into the middle six and bring a gritty edge reminiscent of former Canucks captain Bo Horvat.

Yet unless the Ducks are overwhelmed by an offer, the Canucks may have to shift their focus elsewhere. Still, with McTavish unsigned and the standoff dragging into late summer, Vancouver fans have reason to keep dreaming, for now.
