Kaliyev, 24, spent this past season with the New York Rangers, and it was undoubtedly a tough year for him. He appeared in just 14 games for the Blueshirts, where he posted three goals, one assist, seven hits, and a plus-2 rating. Following this, the Rangers elected not to send him a qualifying offer, so he hit the market as an unrestricted free agent (UFA).
Now, Kaliyev will look to take that next step and break out after signing with the Senators from here. The 6-foot-2 forward has the potential to be a solid NHL player, but has had his struggles over the last two seasons. However, back in 2022-23 with the Los Angeles Kings, he also scored 13 goals and set career highs with 15 assists and 28 points in 56 games. Thus, when playing at his best, he can chip in decent secondary offensive production.
Overall, with the Senators needing more forward depth, there is no harm in them taking a shot on a former top prospect like Kaliyev. It will be intriguing to see how much of an impact he will make with the Senators here.
