NHL Trade Rumors: 3 Potential Trade Destinations for Red Wings' Justin Holl
Detroit Red Wings defenceman Justin Holl hasn't lived up to expectations in Motown, and general manager Steve Yzerman now has a bit of a mess on his hands. Many were surprised Yzerman didn't use the buyout window to rid himself of Holl, and now the attention turns to the trade market.
The 33-year-old right-handed defenceman is entering the final season of his contract, making $3.4 million AAV. Holl owns a 10-team no-trade clause, so he'll have some say in the matter, however once a GM tells you you're not wanted anymore, things can change very quickly.
Here's three teams to keep an eye on:
San Jose Sharks
The Sharks are creeping up to the salary floor, and could use Holl's $3.4 million to get there. They'd be able to use him in a depth role, and from all accounts he's a great dressing room guy to mentor the younger core. These two teams have done business before, this could be a deal to come this offseason, with likely a late-round pick heading back the other way.
Anaheim Ducks
The Ducks, like the Sharks, have a boat load of cap space and are trying to make the playoffs next season. GM Pat Verbeek is very close to Yzerman, so perhaps if the Red Wings are willing to add a sweetener, they can take Holl and his $3.4 million off Yzerman's hands.
Pittsburgh Penguins
The Penguins are don't making moves and could use Holl on their back end. Kyle Dubas is a massive fan of Holl's and is very familiar with the person and player from their days together in Toronto. Dubas once protected Holl in favor of Alex Kerfoot and Jared McCann, perhaps there's a reunion in order this summer.
