Lightning Rumors: Tampa Bay Could Consider Moving Out Ryan McDonagh
The Tampa Bay Lightning could be preparing for another difficult roster decision, as reports from Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos suggest the team may consider trading veteran defenseman Ryan McDonagh just one year after reacquiring him from the Nashville Predators.
McDonagh, 36, played a major role in Tampa’s improved defensive performance last season, recording four goals and 31 points in all 82 games while averaging over 20 minutes per night. He also led the team with a plus-43 rating.
But with a $6.75 million cap hit and only one year left on his deal, moving him would free up significant salary space for other potential moves.
Red Wings Seen as a Potential Fit
Detroit is one of the clubs linked to McDonagh. A hypothetical trade package included prospect Shai Buium, forward Michael Rasmussen, and a 2026 fourth-round pick heading to Tampa Bay. Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman, who originally acquired McDonagh during his tenure in Tampa, could value the veteran’s leadership and playoff pedigree as Detroit continues its climb toward contention.

Rangers Could Explore a Reunion
The New York Rangers have also been floated as a logical suitor. McDonagh was a mainstay in Manhattan from 2010 to 2018 and served as the team’s captain for four seasons. While New York has limited cap flexibility, the defenseman’s short-term contract could make a reunion possible. McDonagh’s ability to stabilize the blueline and provide veteran presence could be enticing for a Rangers team looking to solidify its defensive depth.
This is one elite crew. 🤩

Balancing Desire to Stay vs. Roster Needs
Despite the trade speculation, McDonagh has made it clear he wants to remain in Tampa Bay. "There’s nowhere else I’d want to be for the rest of my career," he said after the Lightning’s first-round playoff exit. General manager Julien BriseBois has also indicated a preference to keep McDonagh, but the organization’s cap crunch could force a move if a strong offer arises.
