3 Teams in the Mix to Sign James Reimer

The NHL's free agent market has slowed down considerably the past few weeks, but that doesn't mean there isn't any talent left unsigned. Insert, veteran goaltender James Reimer, who could battle for a backup position next season, and be an insurance blanket as an experienced number three.

Reimer is coming off a decent season split between the Buffalo Sabres and Anaheim Ducks. In 24 appearances, Reimer posted a 10-10-2 record, with one shutout, and during his 22 games with the Sabres had a respectable 2.85 goals against average, and .901 save percentage.

More teams are ensuring to have three vets on their roster, which makes it somewhat surprising Reimer has yet to sign for the league minimum for next year. There's also been limited rumblings that he will retire, so it will be interesting to see how the next month plays out for the veteran netminder.

As far as potential teams looking for a third goalie, the Edmonton Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Carolina Hurricanes have been linked to Reimer's services. Each team has two capable netminders, but after that, the depth falls off, or there's question marks surrounding some of their prospects.

Don't be surprised to see Reimer land a one-way, league minimum deal, and likely have to clear waivers before opening night next season, and could start in the AHL as an insurance plan. That's if he's up for it and doesn't feel like retirement is going to be better suited for this point in his career. With Toronto having their AHL team in the same city, keep an eye on the Maple Leafs.
