NHL News: Detroit Red Wings Sign Travis Hamonic

Travis Hamonic, Detroit Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings have added to their blueline, as they have signed defenseman Travis Hamonic to a one-year, $1 million contract for the 2025-26 season.

Hamonic, 34, was among the most notable unrestricted free agent (UFA) defensemen left for the taking. Now, after spending a month and a half on the free-agent market, Hamonic has found his new home with the Red Wings by earning this one-year contract.

Hamonic spent this past season with the Ottawa Senators, where he recorded one goal, six assists, seven points, 73 hits, 92 blocks, and a minus-16 rating. This was after the veteran defenseman posted two goals, six points, 54 hits, and a minus-10 rating in 48 games with the Senators during the 2023-24 season.

With this move, the Red Wings have now added some much-needed depth to the right side of their blueline. The veteran defenseman will now provide the Red Wings another option to consider for their bottom pairing but also could be a nice fit as their new seventh defenseman.

Overall, there is very little risk in the Red Wings bringing in Hamonic on this affordable one-year contract. He will provide them with another mentor for their younger players and should be good to have around when injuries occur.
