Oilers Rumors: Insider Pegs Connor McDavid's Likely Signing Window
While the greatest player on planet earth is going into the final season of his eight-year, $100 million contract, he has been eligible for an extension for nearly eight weeks now, and it's been crickets. This, of course, has Edmonton Oilers fans at least a little nervous. They won't be happy until McJesus officially commits to more years in Oil Country.
Friedman has now pegged the precise window when he feels a deal will get done:
Team Canada meets next week in Calgary (Orientation Camp is set for Aug. 26-28). I would expect after Connor McDavid is done there and he goes back to Edmonton, they will work on getting this done.
I just think everybody wants to get it done. I would expect between the Olympic camp and training camp, they sit down and say 'How's this all going to look?'
Earlier this month, fellow insider Frank Seravalli predicted that McDavid would be looking for a deal in the four-year range, with an AAV that could be anywhere between $16M and $17.5 million.
He also downplayed any potential stress that Oilers fans could be feeling.
"There doesn't seem to be any hint of nerves or panic or fear from either the Edmonton Oilers side or the McDavid side," added Seravalli.
It certainly makes sense that The Chosen One will choose not to have to deal with the hassle of being inundated with questions about it once the media descends on training camp, so as Friedman suggests, it should most likely be taken care of by that time.
