The Ducks made the announcement on Tuesday, as they've decided to walk away from the 21-year-old blueliner. Last season Dionicio split time between the AHL's San Diego Gulls and Biel HC of the Swiss Hockey League. Standing 6-foot-2, Dionicio had two seasons left on his entry level contract, however, something must have happened to make the organization move on.
The Ducks drafted Dionicio in the 2023 NHL Draft, fifth round, 129th overall. With his Swiss roots, there's certainly a chance the defenceman heads back to Switzerland to continue on his career. He's represented Switzerland on the international stage multiple times so far to this point of his hockey career.
It's been quite the fall from grace after Dionicio was considered by many as a legit prospect to start last season, with a decent chance at getting a look with the Ducks as soon as this season. However, Dionicio was suspended by the AHL twice in January as a result of on-ice actions, one and three games respectively. Before he could serve the second suspension, the Ducks assigned Dionicio to the ECHL, and then to his native Switzerland.
In 24 games with San Diego, Dionicio scored five goals and nine points.
