NHL Rumors: Teams To Try & Lure Marc Andre Fleury Out Of Retirement

Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Marc Andre Fleury salutes the crowd during 2025 preseason game.

Pittsburgh Penguins fans packed PPG Paints Arena on Saturday for what was billed as Marc-Andre Fleury’s final NHL appearance, but the story may not be over.

The beloved goaltender signed a PTO to take one last spin in black and gold, marking his first start for Pittsburgh since 2017. The atmosphere was electric, as fans celebrated a franchise icon who helped deliver three Stanley Cups during his 13 seasons with the team.

Fleury calls it a career...for now

But even as Fleury prepares to close the book on an extraordinary career, NHL insiders are suggesting his retirement may not stick.

Pierre LeBrun of TSN reported that teams will “100 percent” call Fleury in January to try to convince him back into the crease. His longtime agent, Allan Walsh, fanned the flames by responding to LeBrun’s post with the classic eyes emoji, hinting that discussions about a return may already be in the air.

Fleury, now 40, has little left to prove.

He sits second all-time in NHL goaltender wins with 572, behind only Martin Brodeur, and remains one of the most respected locker-room leaders in hockey. Still, contenders like the Edmonton Oilers and Carolina Hurricanestwo teams unsettled in goal, could come calling if their situations grow dire.

Whether Fleury answers the phone is another matter, but for now, one of the game's greatest netminders has called it a career.
