Oilers Rumors: Update On Jake Walman Contract Talks With Edmonton

The Edmonton Oilers have started negotiations on a new deal for defenseman Jake Walman, with multiple reports noting his agent met the club late last week.

An agreement is not expected to be announced until Connor McDavid’s extension is finalized, but both sides appear aligned on keeping Walman in Edmonton. The 29-year-old earned trust after arriving at the deadline and logging heavy minutes during the run to the Stanley Cup Final.

He played both sides effectively and projects as a top-four staple again this year.

What the Deal Could Look Like

Local chatter has centered on a long-term extension. Insiders have floated frameworks ranging from six years in the “sixes” AAV to the idea of Edmonton using its ability to offer max term to keep the cap hit in check.

Walman is entering the final season of a three-year contract signed in Detroit and is due a raise after proving he can handle matchup minutes next to Edmonton’s core.

With the cap set to climb over the next few seasons, locking in a mobile defender who fits the top four makes roster planning cleaner around Evan Bouchard, Darnell Nurse, and Mattias Ekholm.
