3 Teams With Interest In Bruins' Prospect Goalie DiPietro
It is the time of the year when NHL teams are making final cuts and interesting players are hitting waivers and are exposed to the rest of the teams. There have already been players claimed on waivers this preseason and more could be on the way, if not trades closely after.
One prospect goaltender to take note of is Michael DiPietro, who was one of the three goalies, along with Nico Daws and Clay Stevenson, who were all put on waivers at the same time, that teams have shown interest in. But in regard to DiPietro, James Mirtle said, "The Maple Leafs and Flames have shown interest before, and the Hurricanes are monitoring closely."
The Toronto Maple Leafs are without Joseph Woll for the time being and appear to be running with Denis Hildeby as the backup until his return. DiPietro is NHL-ready, and there were even talks that he would overtake Joonas Korpisalo as the backup on the Boston Bruins this season. The Maple Leafs would have more than enough goalie depth if DiPietro were to be brought in, but that's never a bad thing.
The Calgary Flames are an interesting team to be linked to another young goalie, as Dustin Wolf is the clear starter, Ivan Prosvetov was signed for this season, and Devin Cooley is in the mix. The assumption would be that a veteran goalie would be best suited for the backup role in Calgary, but that doesn't mean that has to be the case. DiPietro could compete for the backup role on the Flames and be an interesting choice, as there is no clear one at the moment.
The Carolina Hurricanes do have to cover their bases in net. We have to assume Frederik Andersen will get injured and miss time at some point this season, leaving the Hurricanes to run Pyotr Kochetkov as the starter and Cayden Primeau as the backup. I think they would like to avoid that situation in net and moving forward, Kochetkov and DiPietro could be a solid tandem, as it might suit Carolina the best to stick to that type of presence in net.
DiPietro has pushed his way into the NHL conversation and will get playing time in the NHL this season, wherever that may be.
