NHL Rumors: Flyers Making Trade Calls For Top Defenseman

The Philadelphia Flyers are looking for a top-four defenseman, and David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reports general manager Danny Briere has the flexibility to act. 

After reinforcing the forward group, the front office is now surveying the market for a blue liner in his mid 20s who fits the core and can handle matchup minutes right away. With cap room available, Philadelphia is in a good spot to chase a multi-asset deal if the right name shakes free.

Why the Flyers want a top-four defenseman

The Flyers want a top-four defenseman who can grow with the roster rather than a short rental. That would be a player with prime-age upside who can log heavy even strength usage, penalty kill shifts, and stabilize pairings. 

Pagnotta notes Philadelphia is open to packaging one of its NHL forwards along with draft picks or prospects to get it done. The club is also believed to be willing to move 2020 second round pick Emil Andrae if he helps unlock the right return.

Potential targets and what a deal could cost

Names are fluid this early, but the San Jose Sharks are believed to be listening on defensemen Mario Ferraro and Timothy Liljegren. 

Both are pending unrestricted free agents, which could bring the price down or nudge the Flyers to seek an extension window as part of talks. A framework that includes a roster forward plus futures fits with Philadelphia’s profile and keeps space for a younger top-four defenseman to slot into the long term plan.
