After a couple of seasons of finding it difficult to catch on with an NHL team, free agent Kevin Labanc has decided to take his talents to the KHL, signing with the Shanghai Dragons.

Labanc was in camp with the Carolina Hurricanes on a PTO, but despite three assists in five preseason games, they released him from that tryout at the end of September. He's spent the last week or so perusing other opportunities, and it turns out the Shanghai option was his best shot at playing a meaningful role this season.

Shanghai signs Kevin Labanc as a top-six forward

The team is looking at Labanc as a top-six winger, per a statement from GM Igor Varitsky.

"He’s a right-handed forward who thrives in offensive situations, generates chances, and finishes plays. He’s also effective on the power play. Multiple KHL clubs were interested, so we’re thrilled that Kevin chose to join the Shanghai Dragons.”

The nine-year NHL veteran joins a familiar face from North America, as he'll be coached by Dragons new bench boss Gerard Gallant

In 542 career NHL games, the 29-year-old Labanc has recorded 89 goals and 162 assists for 251 points. He spent last season with the Columbus Blue Jackets, getting into 34 games as a depth forward, with two goals and 10 assists for 12 points.
