Penguins Stocked On Goalies, Potential Trade Coming
The Pittsburgh Penguins have quickly become one of the deepest organizations for goaltending. With struggles around the league and teams looking for goalies, this is a great time to have extra to spare.
Elliotte Friedman said, "This person said to me...they've got Jarry, Silovs, Murashov, Blomqvist, so Pittsburgh has four guys. Now who knows what they would do with all of this and when."
Tristan Jarry is the longest-tenured, but there have also been trade rumors surrounding him because of his experience. The 30-year-old is 6-2-0 on the season with a 2.53 GAA, .914 SV%, and just returned from injury to put another win on the board. He has two more years left after this one at $5.375 million AAV, so money-wise, it would be easier for the Penguins to keep him, but more likely they will retain some of his cap hit in a trade eventually.
Silovs was acquired in the offseason by the Vancouver Canucks and has immediately stepped in and stepped up. The 24-year-old appears to be a strong piece now and for the future as he's 4-3-4 with a 2.74 GAA and .907 SV%. He has held down the net during Jarry's absence and is an RFA after the season. He likely stays, but Pittsburgh appears to be waiting to see how his entire season goes before giving a new contract that is deserving or not.
The depth is just as interesting for the Penguins and will likely be the reason that Jarry is pushed out before the end of his contract. Joel Blomqvist played 15 games in the NHL last season for the Penguins, but the team was much worse and his numbers weren't as great, posting a 3.81 GAA and .885 SV% in 15 games. But in the AHL last season, the 23-year-old had a 2.84 GAA and .914 SV% in 18 games, while having a 1.34 GAA and .952 SV% through three games this season. He wasn't the goalie that was called up during the time Jarry was out of the lineup though. That was Sergei Murashov.
The 21-year-old split time between the ECHL and the AHL last season, putting up great numbers in both leagues. But this season, he deserved the call-up as he has a 1.73 GAA and .931 SV% in seven games in the AHL and had a 1.9 GAA and .912 SV% for the Penguins, giving the team the thought that he can contribute more in the NHL sooner.
Given the Penguins' situation, nothing is imminent, but a team like the Edmonton Oilers has been linked to Jarry, so desperation from other teams could speed up the process.
