Report: Bruins & Canucks Emerging as Trade Partners
The Boston Bruins are buying, and the Vancouver Canucks are selling, and it may only be a matter of time before the two teams do some business together.
The Canucks have been in the news a ton lately, as Jim Rutherford and Patrik Allvin have made their veteran core players available, and talks have picked up in a major way. The American Thanksgiving holiday is a huge milestone to general managers, and with the Canucks on the outside looking in at the playoff picture, the Canucks management team is essentially throwing in the towel on this season. Add in the fact Quinn Hughes isn't going to re-sign and the Canucks are a huge mess.
As for the Bruins, they have interest in Conor Garland and Kiefer Sherwood. Boston have overachieved so far this season and are looking to take advantage of it. The enter Saturday's action with a 14-12-0 record, just one point out of a playoff spot.
The Bruins have just $1 million in cap space, so they'll need to get creative if they want to add Garland and his $6 million AAV contract, which kicks in next year. Sherwood on the other hand, is a bargain at $1.5 million and could be someone the Bruins zone in on.
Here's more from the report from Bruins beat writer James Murphy:
RG has learned through an NHL source close to the situation that two players Sweeney has recently inquired about are Canucks wingers Kiefer Sherwood and Conor Garland.
“They have 100 percent called on both players,” the source said of the Bruins’ interest in Sherwood and Garland. “They want scoring and believe that with some more, this team can definitely stay in the race and make some noise."
Sherwood is 100% getting traded, as the Canucks will look to cash in on their pending free agent. Meanwhile, Garland is going to be tough to acquire, considering his contract extension hasn't even kicked in yet and the Canucks will need to see a mega-offer to consider it. Also keep an eye on Evander Kane, Tyler Myers, Teddy Blueger, David Kampf, and Jake DeBrusk as trade candidates out of Vancouver.
As for Bruins trade candidates, Vancouver will do whatever they can to try and convince the Bruins to trade either Matt Poitras or Fraser Minten in any deal.
