Wildcard Goalie Added To Team Canada Olympic Goalie List
The teams that played for the 4 Nations Faceoff aren't going to be the same as the teams the four nations will be bringing to the Olympics. While Canada won, there are going to be changes at all positions, especially the volatile goaltending position.
There are a number of possibilities in net, but I think only one thing is for certain. Jordan Binnington, after helping Team Canada win gold, has a spot amongst the three goalies that will be brought. But Darren Dreger reported, "Scott Wedgewood has been added to Canada's list for possible Olympic participation."
Wedgewood got the net for the Colorado Avalanche at the beginning of the season due to Mackenzie Blackwood's injury. Wedgewood ran with it and has played excellently this season, even holding the net for at least half of the games since Blackwood's return.
Some of the choices in net for Team Canada last year involved someone like Blackwood not being on the team, and instead, Sam Montembeault and Adin Hill getting the call. This season, Wedgewood, a career backup, has completely passed over Blackwood and gotten himself on the list of potential goalies in the mix.
Wedgewood is 13-1-2 on the season with a 2.09 GAA, .918 SV%, one shutout, and a 9 GSAx (goals saved above expected). He was excellent last season after being acquired by the Avalanche, but the veteran is now just two games short of his total from last season and it is just the 22-game mark of the season.
While it doesn't matter who makes what for Team Canada and the Olympics, the Avalanche have Wedgewood on a great contract, making $1.5 million AAV this season and $2.5 million AAV next season. Wedgewood should absolutely be in the mix as he has proven he can make the key saves this season and has been one of the best goalies in the entire league.
