Maple Leafs Rumors: Top Tier Head Coach To Take Over If Berube Is Fired
The Toronto Maple Leafs have had somewhat of a nightmare season and are second-last in the Eastern Conference with 37 points (16-15-5). There have been plenty of injuries, underperforming players, and assistant coach Marc Savard already let go, but more is going to be in store for the Maple Leafs if they don't go on a run very soon.
The next to go will have to be head coach Craig Berube, despite comments that Berube and GM Brad Treliving are safe. Organizations will always say that until it gets worse, and expectations for the Maple Leafs are playoffs at the very least, but a deep run like they haven't been able to do in many years.
Chris Johnston said, " Peter DeBoer would likely be the Maple Leafs' target if they opt to make a coaching change."
DeBoer has an impressive record, but unfortunately no Stanley Cup despite how many teams he has coached so well and how deep he has gotten many times. He has a coaching record of 662-447-152, taking the Dallas Stars to a first place and two second place finishes, the Vegas Golden Knights to two first place and one fourth place finishes, and the San Jose Sharks to a second place, three third place, and one eighth place finish.
DeBoer also coached the Florida Panthers and New Jersey Devils in his younger days at the start of his coaching career, but has gained plenty of experience and his teams are much better now than they were.
Getting to the playoffs hasn't been a concern for the Maple Leafs since Matthews, William Nylander, and Mitch Marner entered the league, but while it seems like a problem this season, they also need a head coach that has playoff success and can guide them past the first round or the second round. DeBoer has a record of 97-82 in the playoffs. The Maple Leafs have the roster, but it may now be time for a new voice in the near future.
