Seattle Kraken trade Mason Marchment to Columbus Blue Jackets

The NHL's trade market heated up right before the holiday roster freeze, as multiple trades were announced late Friday night, including a deal between the Seattle Kraken and Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Blue Jackets added some offense, acquiring forward Mason Marchment from the Kraken, in exchange for the New York Rangers' fourth-round pick in 2026 NHL Draft, and the Blue Jackets own second-round pick in 2027.

Marchment had been rumored to be involved in trade talks for weeks, as he couldn't seem to find a fit in Seattle, and with the team struggling, they wanted to cash in on their asset. The 30-year-old winger had four goals in 29 games this season, and is making $4.5 million against the cap.

The trade gives the Kraken some of their draft pick capital back after they moved a fourth and a third-rounder just six months ago to the Dallas Stars to acquire Marchment. The Blue Jackets are trying to make some noise this season and see Marchment as a perfect complement to their group.

"Mason is a player I know very well, and I think he will add a great deal to our team," Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell said. "He is a physical, hard-nosed competitor with proven offensive ability, and we are very excited to have him join the Blue Jackets."

The Blue Jackets faceoff against the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday, at this point, it's unclear if Marchment will be in the lineup. Meanwhile, the Kraken continue to be a team to watch on the trade market in the new year, as they are in full sell mode.
