Toronto Maple Leafs won't be firing Craig Berube
The Toronto Maple Leafs have struggled this season and with the league's worst power play, decided to fire assistant coach Marc Savard. General manager Brad Treliving spoke to the media on Tuesday ahead of their afternoon affair with the Pittsburgh Penguins, and opened up about what could be coming next.
From the sounds of it, head coach Craig Berube's job is very safe, and regardless of the outcome this season, there won't be a coaching change in Toronto. Berube was apparently pissed off with the move to fire Savard, but at the end of the day it's a results-oriented business and right now the power play isn't getting any results.
Well, I’m not going to get into hypotheticals of what happens with this. We’ve got a good coach. We’ve got to continue to make our team better. We’ve got areas that we’ve got to get better in. It’s not lost on us where the team’s at. We live it every day. But I think we’ve got a real good coach. And that’s not to say we don’t change some things, tweak some things. We’ve done that over the course of the last couple of weeks. When you get in these situations, to me, you have to band together and you look for collective solutions. And that’s what we’re trying to do.
The Maple Leafs haven't been able to string together a consistent enough amount of wins this season and are heading into the Christmas break on the outside looking in at the Stanley Cup Playoff race. The big guns are firing and they've been hit hard by the injury bug. There's a lot of different variables to consider this season for the Leafs, but at the end of the day it's a business, and sometimes decisions can be tough.

Instead of Treliving or Berube being let go, look for the Maple Leafs to make a significant trade early in 2026.
