3 Teams Pushing To Acquire Canucks' Sherwood
The Vancouver Canucks have lost eight games in a row and 10 of their last 111. The team sits dead last in the league and already traded away their franchise player in Quinn Hughes. There is no reason to think that more moves aren't coming soon with the way things are going.
One of the biggest, even the biggest piece that the Canucks can trade is Kiefer Sherwood. David Pagnotta said, "Dallas has been in on it. Boston, Minnesota even prior to the Quinn Hughes move. There are others."
There is no shortage of teams being linked to Sherwood because of the impact he has all over the ice and his very cheap cap hit. The 30-year-old is in the last year of his deal at $1.5 million AAV and it doesn't seem likely that the Canucks will be able to re-sign him, or a smart move to do so with the return they can get and the direction the team is inevitably headed.
Sherwood has 17 goals and 23 points in 44 games this season. He leads the Canucks by a decent amount in goals, can play up and down the lineup, and is on the power play and penalty kill averaging over two minutes per game on each per game.
The Canucks should be able to at least get a first-round pick for Sherwood, especially if a contract extension is worked out in the trade.
The Dallas Stars have cap space and a need for another top-9 player since Tyler Seguin is out for the season. Their forward depth is looking weak, Sherwood's cap hit allows for more moves, and they need to bolster the lineup to go up against the Minnesota Wild and Colorado Avalanche in the playoffs.
The Boston Bruins are hot and are in a playoff spot. They have liked hard-hitting big hockey and Sherwood provides a physical game mixed with scoring, which the Bruins could also use in their top-9. Whether that means moving someone out if they can or not, Sherwood fits in the lineup either way.
The Wild, like the Stars, have to compete with the other two top-3 teams in the league in the first and second round. They already grabbed Hughes for a high price, but definitely aren't done at forward. There's no reason to think the teams can't strike another deal.
