Canucks Expected To Be Next Team To Get Going With Trades
The Vancouver Canucks technically kicked off the trade season when Quinn Hughes was dealt, but there wasn't that much action around the league until the Calgary Flames sent Rasmus Andersson to the Vegas Golden Knights. As the NHL draws closer to the Olympic break and many teams would like to figure things out by that time, the Canucks are expected to be the next team to continue the trades.
According to Chris Johnston, "More conversations are starting to happen around the league. I think Vancouver could be the place to watch most for the next shoe to drop. There's a lot of interest around their players."
Kiefer Sherwood is the main topic of conversation on the Canucks, with his very low cap hit and strong season contributing to many teams having their name in the hat. Per David Pagnotta, "Hearing trade talks involving Canucks' Kiefer Sherwood continue. Per sources, Vancouver's initial ask of a 1st+ is softening, which may now get things going sooner than later."
Sherwood has 17 goals and 23 points in 44 games, plays over 17:30 per game and over two minutes on each of the special teams per game, as well as having over 200 hits already.
Beyond Sherwood, who could be traded with an extension or not as he's a UFA after the season, there's players who could be traded such as Elias Pettersson, Jake DeBrusk, and Evander Kane. It will be tough to see all of these forwards going or many other players as much of them are recent acquisitions or players who just don't make much sense to trade.
The Canucks have a lot to figure out, but it seems like they have the opportunity to make multiple moves and really set up a rebuild properly this time. Better drafting and developing will have to be done, but it's a good year to be at the bottom of the standing with the elite talent they can pull from the draft.
