NHL Rumors: Canucks Could Ask Tyler Myers To Waive His No Trade Clause

Vancouver Canucks defenseman Tyler Myers skates before 2025 game.

Tyler Myers has been a mainstay on the Vancouver Canucks for the past seven seasons and, by all accounts, loves it there, but the closer the March 6 trade deadline gets, the more real the uncomfortable question becomes.

Ben Kuzma of The Province floated the idea that Vancouver could at least explore whether Myers would consider waiving his no movement clause for a shot with a contender, even if the initial answer might be a “resounding ‘no’.”

With the Canucks shifting toward youth on the blue line, the organization may decide the best path forward is asking a respected veteran to choose between staying home and chasing the one thing missing from his resume.

Why the Canucks could test the waters

This is not about Myers falling off a cliff. He turns 36 on Feb. 1, but he has missed just 20 games over the last four seasons and is still playing meaningful minutes, including 20:22 per night in a role that leans top four on a thin right side.

His $3 million cap hit next season is the kind contenders notice immediately, especially for a 6 foot 8 defender who can kill penalties, handle heavy playoff shifts, and slide onto a second or third pairing.

He has one more year left on his three-year, $9M contract ($3M AAV).

Kuzma’s angle is that Myers loves it in Vancouver, but he also knows “career time runs out,” and Vancouver is asking younger defenders to grow into bigger jobs.

If the Canucks feel they can cover his minutes with their internal pipeline and other veterans, it becomes easier to justify having the conversation.

Why Myers might actually listen

Myer has 61 career postseason games, including that 12 game push in 2024 that brought Vancouver within touching distance of something bigger, and he knows how quickly those chances disappear. He' been on multiple teams that had a real shot at going all the way, but always came up short.

Over his seven seasons in Vancouver, Myers has recorded 26 goals, 138 points, a -15 plus/minus rating, 814 blocked shots, and 650 hits across 475 games played.

Kuzma shared Myers describing how seriously he is treating the stretch run physically, saying, “Personally, I feel great physically,” after he did extra blood work and adjusted his nutrition to stay at a high level. That sounds like a player who still believes he has something left for a meaningful spring.
