St. Louis Blues Sign Toropchenko To Multi-Year Deal

Alexey Toropchenko, St. Louis Blues
The St. Louis Blues have signed Alexey Toropchenko to a two-year deal at $2.5 million AAV. The Blues are expecting to go through a number of changes, so this signing appears to allow the team to keep one of their pieces around.

Toropchenko is a 26-year-old winger who was on a one-year $1.7 million AAV deal. He plays around 12.5 minutes per game in the bottom-6 of the Blues and the big forward plays some penalty kill. He's 6'6 and has two goals and five points in 27 games this season.

The big Russian was a fourth-round pick by the Blues back in 2017 and hasn't turned into much more than a fourth line player. He's not a point producer, but rather a role player. But the cap is a tad high for the role he plays hitting people and spending some time on the penalty kill. While the cap is going up, the Blues could use their cap a bit more efficiently as they aren't in a playoff spot and aren't certain of success in the near future.

This signing of Toropchenko seems like the Blues are expecting to move on from Oskar Sundqvist as they play similar styles of hockey and Sundqvist is a UFA after the season. This signing of Toropchenko doesn't mean he is absolutely not going anywhere, but there's a really low chance he will stay in the role he's playing. The Blues have much more work to do with their roster and this is just a start.
