TRADE: Sharks trade Masters, draft pick to Hurricanes

Friday saw a minor trade go down in the NHL, as the San Jose Sharks and Carolina Hurricanes pulled off a trade. The Hurricanes acquired minor-league defenceman Kyle Masters and a 2026 fourth-round draft pick for the Sharks 2027 fifth-round selection.

This move has other implications as the Sharks wanted to move out Masters to clear a contract so they could activate top prospect Michael Misa. Misa needed to be added to their roster in order to play in his 10th game of his NHL career, and the Sharks were at the 50-max contract slots.

Masters, 22, has not played in the NHL and was drafted by the Minnesota Wild in the fourth round back in 2021. Masters has 35 career points in 69 games at the ECHL level, and another six points in 35 games in the AHL.

The 2027 fifth-round selection that Carolina is trading to San Jose was originally Chicago’s pick and was acquired during the 2025 NHL Draft.
