Edmonton Oilers waive goaltender Calvin Pickard
The Edmonton Oilers have a crowded crease, and it appears veteran goaltender Calvin Pickard has become the odd man out. The Oilers announced on Sunday, they've waived Pickard, allowing any team in the league 24 hours to claim him.
Pickard, 33, is a pending unrestricted free agent, making $1 million this season against the cap. The Moncton, NB native has appeared in 16 games for the Oilers this season, posting a 5-6-2 record, along with a 3.68 goals against average, and .871 save percentage.
Edmonton traded for Tristan Jarry earlier in the season, and added Connor Ingram, so this is a move that certainly isn't to any surprise out west. It seemed to be just a matter of time before the Oilers moved on from both of their goaltenders from last season, as a change was needed.
Ingram has started 6-3-1 in his first 11 games with the Oilers, and now with Jarry healthy, Pickard could be on his way out of town, or if he clears, he'll be demoted to the AHL's Bakersfield Condors. If Pickard clears on Monday, he could be assigned to Bakersfield, which would mark his first appearance in the AHL since the 2023-24 season.
In 191 career NHL games, Pickard is 74-77-14 with a 2.96 GAA, a .901 SV% and 5 shutouts. In 13 playoff games with Edmonton, he’s 802 with a 2.72 GAA and .892 SV%.
