Interesting Dynamic Between Oilers & Maple Leafs Regarding The Trade Deadline
The Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers don't often trade, but former Maple Leafs generally find themselves in Edmonton sooner or later. A lot have passed through over the last decade and some are still there thriving like Zach Hyman.
The West and the East are so different this season that the Oilers are second in their division with 64 points in 58 games and the Maple Leafs have 63 points in 57 games, but Toronto is six points out of a playoff spot. While they have had similar seasons, the Oilers have already made moves, and have a strong chance of not only making the playoffs, but going on another run. Toronto has won one playoff round since Auston Matthews and William Nylander have been on the team, meanwhile the Oilers have won eight rounds in the past three seasons.
While the Stanley Cup window is open for the Oilers, Toronto is in a transition year and will likely sell some of their pending UFAs. The Oilers have been connected to Toronto in this regard. Elliotte Freidman said, "I think they would potentially have some interest in some of what Toronto's got now that Toronto's a seller."
While the Maple Leafs want to move Brandon Carlo and Anthony Stolarz, the Oilers already have two goalies and Carlo is too rich for them for what he has done this season. Who the real one and only target from Toronto that the Oilers are looking at and rumored to be interested in is Bobby McMann.
This is an established NHL player who can score and has familiarity playing with top players. Acquiring someone like this could allow the Oilers to finally shift Ryan Nugent-Hopkins to the third line, have strong wingers for him, and have good enough wingers in the top-6 for Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, giving the team three strong lines and scoring threats on the ice at all times. For another Cup run, this is something that could be beneficial. What it would cost remains to be seen, but McMann might not fetch a first-round pick.
