Canadiens & Blues In Advanced Trade Talks

Keep an eye on the Montreal Canadiens landing one of the best goaltenders on the market before Friday afternoon's trade deadline.

Reports have surfaced stating the Canadiens and St. Louis Blues are in advanced trade talks surrounding goaltender Jordan Binnington ending up in Montreal, and Canadiens goaltender Sam Montembeault heading to the Blues.

The Canadiens haven't been satisfied with their goaltending this season, and have the type of talented team that could damage in the Stanley Cup Playoffs with a hot netminder in the crease. Binnington has play so-so on a very bad Blues team this season, but showed at the Olympics, he's still very capable of winning the big game, and played outstanding for Team Canada.

Binnington owns trade protection, but he's excited about a chance to play meaningful hockey in a hockey crazy city like Montreal. Meanwhile, he's also signed through next season, so this is much more than just making a move for a rental.

Montembeault would give the Blues another goaltender to pair with Joel Hofer, as things are certainly changing in St. Louis. GM Doug Armstrong has been trying to move Colton Parayko, and even though Buffalo didn't work out, look for the Los Angeles Kings to make a move.

Justin Faulk is likely heading back to Carolina, Brayden Schenn and Robert Thomas could also be on the move, in what might be the biggest day of change in franchise history.

Nick Kypreos: There’s barely a market for goaltenders Jordan Binnington of the Blues or Sergei Bobrovsky of the Panthers right now outside of maybe Carolina, Vegas or Montreal - Toronto Star (3/5)

As for the Habs, expect them to move Patrik Laine at some point Friday, to free up significant cap space, which could help them land the former Stanley Cup champion in Binnington between the pipes.
