TRADE: Capitals & Golden Knights Completing Deal For Top Defensive Center

Nic Dowd, NHL center

The Vegas Golden Knights are acquiring the fourth-line center they were looking for, in Nic Dowd from the Washington Capitals, per insider David Pagnotta.

The deal was made official late this morning, with the Golden Knights sending goalie Jesper Vikman, currently playing in the AHL, and two draft picks: a 2027 third-rounder, and a 2029 second-rounder.

Dowd, 35, is in his eighth year with the Caps, and has another season to run on his two-year deal with a $3 million cap hit.

He's been one of the best defensive fourth-line centers in the league for many years. The 6'2" center provides physical play (averaging well over 100 hits per season), along with being a top penalty killer and what teams like to refer to as a "glue guy". He was a respected leader in the Washington locker room.

Dowd usually also adds a little offense to boot. He had been scoring anywhere from 10 to 14 goals a season the previous several campaigns. But that part has dried up in 2025-26, as he has only four goals and 16 points in 55 games along with a minus-6 rating.

For his career, in 637 games, Dowd has 88 goals and 104 assists for 192 points. He also has 1,189 hits and 360 penalty minutes.

The Capitals are still in the playoff hunt, just four points back of a Wild Card spot in the East, but decided to pull the trigger nonetheless. Insider Pierre LeBrun says that the Caps are trying to do a bit of both buying and selling at this deadline.

The Golden Knights continue to cling to first place in the Pacific Division, but it's been a slog of late. Their 72 points would not even be good enough for a Wild Card berth in the East.
