NHL Trade Rumors: Maple Leafs to trade Stolarz or Woll this offseason
The Toronto Maple Leafs are a team to watch on the offseason trade market, as once the new general manager is in place, they'll quickly realize it's going to be an option to move out some goaltending depth to address other holes in the lineup.
The Maple Leafs have four goaltenders signed for next season, and all four of them held game action this season. The main two who will be hitting the trade block are the oft-injured Anthony Stolarz, and one-time goaltender of the future, Joseph Woll.
Stolarz, who was recently injured making a kick save, has a four-year contract extension kicking in next season. The 32-year-old netminder is owed $3.75 million AAV through the 2030 season, and holds a 16-team no-trade clause. Stolarz has gone through an up and down year, and there's been lots of downs, but with how bad the Maple Leafs defense core is this season, his numbers may not be as bad as many are making them out to be. Stolarz will be the less attractive trade chip as he's five years older than Woll, and certainly doesn't do himself any favors with his injury track record.
Woll, 27, is signed through the next two seasons at $3.66 million AAV, and next season doesn't hold any trade protection. IF the Leafs want to land a top-six forward or top-four defenceman, Woll will need to be included in the trade. With Dennis Hildeby showing signs of being NHL ready, and with Artur Akhtyamov waiting in the wings, the Leafs can afford to move one of their veterans to give either 24-year-old a longer look next season.
There's going to be plenty of teams looking to make goaltending changes next season, including the Edmonton Oilers, Ottawa Senators, Philadelphia Flyers, New Jersey Devils, and potentially the Vancouver Canucks.
Keep an eye on the Leafs. There's major changes coming to their roster, and when it comes to the trade market, expect to see one of their goaltenders moved this offseason.
