5 Potential Free-Agent Destinations for Boone Jenner
Boone Jenner is in store for a nice payday on July 1.
The pending free-agent forward has changed agents this offseason and is setting himself up to meet with teams late next month, to then sign a multi-year contract on July 1st once free agency opens. All signs at the moment are indeed pointing at the long-time Blue Jacket to leave Columbus.
The Athletic's Aaron Portzline who is the most in-tune reporter who follows the Blue Jackets daily has made it clear he thinks Jenner is headed elsewhere once able.
As this summer unfolds, it’s easy to see a scenario in which the once-hard-to-believe may come true: that Boone Jenner gets squeezed out of the mix in Columbus and is allowed to sign elsewhere as a free agent on or after July 1. But the Blue Jackets have arrived at a pivotal summer, one in which their actions must finally meet their words, and the more you look at the dynamics in play, the harder it is to see a clear spot where Jenner is a fit. The Athletic recently learned from multiple sources close to Jenner that he has fired his longtime agent, Joe Resnick of Top Shelf Sports Management, after the better part of two decades together.
As far as potential free-agent destinations, the Toronto Maple Leafs are expected to have serious interest as Auston Matthews and William Nylander both asked for 'some more bite' up front in their lineup, and Jenner could slide in nicely as the number-two center, moving John Tavares down a peg.
The Boston Bruins, Edmonton Oilers, San Jose Sharks and Anaheim Ducks could also have interest this summer as each team is looking for more depth down the middle of the ice.
For now, Jenner's new agent will begin to get a sense of the market, and figure out how kind of pay raise Jenner is in store for. Blue Jackets fans, how are we feeling that Jenner has one foot out?
