Maple Leafs Facing Tough Competition In Wooing David Carle

David Carle, head coach of University of Denver

Word started to leak out a few days ago that the Toronto Maple Leafs are interested in seeing if they can convince highly sought-after young coach David Carle to leave the University of Denver and take on their head coaching job.

Insider Elliotte Friedman has doubled down on that report, telling Donnie & Dhali that the Leafs are definitely interested in the three-time NCAA champion.

"I think they're working through that... I think everybody's trying to gauge what the possibility is, really... I do think Toronto wants to make Carle at least think about them, and see if they can do that."

However, the Leafs are actually facing an almost impossible task in the competition to woo Carle to Toronto.

The fact is, with all the security in the world after his incredible eight-year run leading the Pioneers, the 36-year-old Carle has no need to leave Denver.

Ever.

Will University of Denver's David Carle wait it out for the Colorado Avalanche coaching job?

Is there any chance at all that the Colorado Avalanche would consider moving on from Jared Bednar and try to talk Carle into changing his work address in Denver?

Maybe not this year, but one day, eventually, insiders Jeff Marek and David Pagnotta figure that it's inevitable.

"David Carle will be the next head coach of the Colorado Avalanche," said Marek. "Whenever, it's not gonna happen anytime soon, but that's the move..."

"Wholeheartedly agree," said Pagnotta. "“I think the trajectory is, when Colorado makes that (coaching) change in however many years down the road, that he’s their guy.”

Unless, Marek says, some NHL team swoops in and offers him "life-changing money. Not just his life, but his kids' life, and his grandkids' life. That's the only way that David Carle does not stay at the University of Denver, and then one day take over the Colorado Avalanche."

Should the Leafs try to make that kind of offer? Let us know in the comments.
