Report: Morgan Rielly Open To Trade From Maple Leafs

The longest-tenured Toronto Maple Leaf could be starting the next chapter of his career.

Reports have surfaced indicating that Leafs defenceman Morgan Rielly is contemplating his future and is softening his stance on his no-movement clause. There is belief that Rielly is now open to a trade to the Western Conference, and there's a few teams that make sense as destinations.

Nick Kypreos: Before Toronto’s new front office was put in place, industry sources believed the Leafs would be looking into moving on from [Morgan Rielly]. That remains true, now that Mats Sundin and John Chayka are in place - Sportsnet (5/27)

Rielly is signed through the 2030 season at $7.5 million AAV, and he's quickly become the scapegoat for Leafs Nation after a couple of down seasons. Rielly has a young family and there's speculation he'd welcome a trade to the Vancouver Canucks, Seattle Kraken, Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Kings, and San Jose Sharks.

The Maple Leafs are in for a busy offseason as Chayka and Sundin are going to give this Leafs team a huge makeover, and it starts on the back end. Toronto needs a new structure on defence that includes two more puck-moving defenceman, and specifically likely right-handed ones. Auston Matthews, William Nylander and John Tavares all mentioned the blueline was a sore spot for the team during their exit interviews, and Chayka hasn't been shy since taken over the team.

Look for Rielly to be shipped out around the NHL Draft, as Chayka will look to have some more financial flexibility for July 1. He's expected to make a couple of significant signings, but apparently, most of his heavy lifting will come on the trade market, which starts with Rielly's deal.
