Insider Reveals Nico Hischier's Future
With one year remaining on top-line center Nico Hischier's contract, the New Jersey Devils have a big decision to make this summer. Come July 1, he will be eligible for an extension.
The decision? Will they be willing to meet his massive price, or would they actually go the trade route?
Insider Kevin Weekes has revealed that he expects Hischier & the Devils to find common ground on a 'medium-term' extension. But wait till you hear the numbers he throws around:
👀 Although talks are ongoing, my speculation is that C Hischier and @NJDevils will land on a medium term contract extension somewhere between

Weekes speculates that Hischier's deal will come in with an AAV of somewhere between $11 million and $13 million. Whoa.
The 27-year-old has been as consistent as they come over the last several years, recording anywhere from 28-35 goals per season over the last four campaigns, and between 66-80 points. This past season, the front-line center came in at 28 goals and 66 points with a -6 rating. That's very good production, but is it worth superstar-like money?
That Weekes projection sounds a bit rich, when you take into account recent comps, and the fact that Evolving Hockey has Hischier projected at a four-year deal at $10.2 million AAV, or a five-year contract at $9.874 million.
That sounds a little more like it, but we'll have to see how the Devils and new GM Sunny Mehta approach it. Weekes has some good sources, and those are pretty specific numbers he threw out there, so this could be an interesting situation to keep an eye on.
Hischier has spent his entire 9-year career in Jersey, and has been the team captain for the past five years.
