Maple Leafs Reject Multiple Draft-Day Trade Offers
The Toronto Maple Leafs are talking trade on several of their players, but that doesn't mean general manager John Chayka is going to make a move, just to make a move. Talks picked up in a major way the past few days, focused mostly on trying to land another top-10 pick, while also having defencemen Brandon Carlo and Morgan Rielly the center of talks.
While Chayka is determined to reshape his blueline, which has already started with the acquisitions of Emil Andrea, and Darren Raddysh, the Leafs' GM won't be giving away Carlo or Rielly for free. There's been plenty of speculation that teams have asked for a trade sweetener to take on the rest of Rielly's contract, but that's something Chayka wants no part of. There was talks that the San Jose Sharks were willing to listen on their late first-round pick Friday, but the Leafs weren't willing to include a package with Rielly to facilitate the deal.
David Pagnotta: Re Morgan Rielly/Maple Leafs: There's gonna be some type of value coming back, this is not a dump, this is not a...save us 7.5 million; this is addressing other needs - Leafs Morning Take (6/24)
The longest-tenured Maple Leaf has four years left on his contract at $7.5 million AAV, and has recently submitted a list of four teams he'd be willing to waive his no-movement clause for. They include the Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks, and potentially the Vegas Golden Knights. All four teams were from the Western Conference, but there's been some back and forth about exact destinations. The Ducks and Sharks were 100% confirmed.
Look for the Maple Leafs to make a splash during draft weekend, as drafting Gavin McKenna first overall was just a start. Chayka has several trade talks that have advanced past just 'kicking tires', and there's a very good chance both Carlo and Rielly will be moved at some point before July 1, when free agency opens.
John Chayka says right now he anticipates Morgan Rielly being on the team. Jim Hiller has been in touch and is excited to work with Rielly.
